Calumet Christian School

Preschool at Calumet

Considering Preschool at CCS?

Our requirements are:

  • Being fully potty trained. Does he/she have the ability to stop what they’re doing to tell the teacher they need to go potty; able to wipe themselves; able to redress themselves in the event a clothing change is necessary. Practice with your child how to use public restrooms.

  • For 2 day preschool, age 3 by August 1

  • For 3 day preschool, age 4 by August 1

Calumet Christian School’s preschool program focuses on the development of the whole child and provides opportunities for students to improve their social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and physical skills. The following questions are based on skills assessed in the beginning months of preschool and are here to help guide you as you consider your child’s readiness for preschool.

  • Can your child follow simple directions without needing them repeated many times?

  • Has your child had experience being left with another adult and trust that you will return to get them?

  • Is your child able to communicate/express their needs to an adult?

  • Does your child have some basic emotional regulation? When they have a tantrum, are they able to calm themselves alone or with your help after a few minutes?

  • How does your child interact with other children, both in play and conflict? Do they use kind words and kind hands?

  • Is your child able to sit for a minimum of 10 minutes (excluding screen time) to focus on a story or activity?

Again, these questions are to guide you in determining if your child is ready for preschool. Of course, your child may have “off days,” but we’re looking for general consistency with most of the skills listed above. Children develop at different rates and it’s okay if he or she is 3 years old and still developing these skills. If your child struggles with several of the above skills, it may be an indicator he/she is not ready for preschool and may need more time or support. There are many things you can do with your child at home to help them prepare for future school success. If you have concerns about your child’s development, we encourage you to reach out to their pediatrician, Help Me Grow, or the preschool department of your local public school district.

If you’re ready to apply, you’ll need

  1. A copy of their birth certificate

  2. A physician or childcare statement

  3. A copy of their most recent immunization record

These items must be submitted with your application for it to be complete. It is helpful to have an electronic version of these documents.
